Red Bull is one of the world’s most popular energy drinks that at one point only featured a single, non-descriptive flavor. Over the years they began offering much more variety, including flavors and sugar-free options. A lot of people are dependent on their caffeinated beverages to get through the day, but the stimulatory effects of excessive caffeine consumption can lead to negative side effects.

For this reason, it is a good idea to keep up with how much caffeine you are getting daily. So, how much caffeine is in Red Bull and the Red Bull Editions?  Red Bull Editions typically contain 80 mg of caffeine per 8.4-oz can. In this article, we will break down the caffeine content of some of the different Red Bull Editions and look a bit further into each one.

Caffeine Content in Red Bull

One thing about Red Bull is that the caffeine content is the same across the board. It does not matter which edition you get; it will have 80mg of caffeine in an 8.4 fluid ounce can and 114mg of caffeine in a 12-fluid-ounce can.

The editions are only available in 8.4 fluid ounce cans or 12 fluid ounce cans while original Red Bull, Red Bull Sugarfree, and Red Bull Zero sugar come in those sizes and larger options. Overall, you can expect 9.5mg of caffeine per fluid ounce, regardless of the flavor edition or can size.

The Red Bull Editions

As mentioned, Red Bull used to only offer their original product with the lower calorie versions available to the consumer. Over time, competitors in the energy drink market brought forth some flavor diversity, ultimately leading Red Bull to do the same.

The company first launched flavor editions in March of 2013. The first three editions were the cranberry-flavored Red Edition, the blueberry-flavored Blue Edition, and the lime-flavored Silver Edition.

Over time, certain flavors have been discontinued and editions have been changed. There are currently 10 types of Red Bull beverages on the market including the original Red Bull, Red Bull Sugarfree, Red Bull Zero Sugar, and six editions of varying flavors. Depending on the season, there will either be a Summer Edition or Winter Edition on the market.

Side Effects of Excessive Energy Drink Consumption

Caffeine can have some serious effects on the body, which is why it is recommended that healthy adults consume no more than 400 mg per day. Here are some of the potential side effects of excessive caffeine consumption.

Insomnia

Caffeine is a stimulant, so it only makes sense that it could lead some to experience insomnia. A restful night’s sleep is very important to your overall health and as nice as it is to get that heavy kick of caffeine to get you moving, you need to ensure it doesn’t interrupt your sleep.

The best thing you can do is avoid caffeine before bed and ensure you are not going overboard with the amount you are consuming daily.

Anxiety

Anxiety is an unwelcome and debilitating effect that is possible with caffeine. Since caffeine stimulates the central nervous system, it can activate anxiety in some individuals.  Feelings of anxiousness, jitteriness, and even irritability are not uncommon.

It’s recommended to either avoid caffeine or consume only small amounts if you have an anxiety disorder. Whether you have been diagnosed by a medical professional or are just aware of your anxious tendencies, you could try cutting out caffeine to see if it improves your condition.

Heart Palpitations/Tachycardia

Many people experience heart palpitations or an increase in heart rate, known as tachycardia. This can happen in addition to anxiety or even the absence of anxiety if one has consumed too much caffeine.

If someone already suffers palpitations, caffeine could potentially exacerbate the symptoms so check with your doctor regarding caffeine consumption, especially energy drinks.

Dehydration

Caffeine is a diuretic, which can cause frequent urination and even dehydration. Don’t skimp out on water consumption if you indulge in heavy caffeine consumption because you will be putting yourself at risk of dehydration.

High Blood Pressure

Caffeine has been shown to increase blood pressure, even in individuals that do not suffer from high blood pressure. The response to caffeine will vary by individual but anyone suffering from high blood pressure must use caution when consuming caffeine and speak to their doctor about what kind of limitations they need to place on themselves.

Heartburn and Upset Stomach

Caffeinated beverages are typically highly acidic, which can cause upset stomach, and digestive discomfort, contribute to heartburn or exacerbate ulcers. Caffeine is also associated with gut motility and an increase in the muscle contraction of the gastrointestinal tract, which can lead to diarrhea or an urge to eliminate.

Obesity/Increased Risk of Type 2 Diabetes

Most energy drinks are high in sugar and can cause a severe spike in both blood sugar and blood insulin levels. Regular consumption of these sugar-filled drinks may eventually lead to type 2 diabetes among many other health concerns including obesity.

Negative Effects on Kidney Health

Studies have shown that excessive energy drink consumption may lead to kidney stones and an overall decline in kidney function. It is important to limit your intake of energy drinks for this reason, among many others.

Tooth Decay

Due to the high acidity of energy drinks, consuming them too often can lead to erosion of tooth enamel and ultimately lead to tooth decay. Make sure you keep up with regular dental check-ups and speak to your dentist about ways to minimize or prevent damage to your teeth.

Caffeine Toxicity

Extremely high levels of caffeine can be very dangerous and lead to caffeine toxicity. Caffeine toxicity can lead to severe heart issues and is potentially fatal. It’s best to maintain the recommended limitation of caffeine depending on your health and your doctor’s advice. Generally, keep consumption down to 400mg or less per day as a healthy adult.

Caffeine Withdrawal

Regular caffeine drinkers may experience caffeine withdrawal if they stop drinking caffeine or go too long between consumption.  This is a central nervous system stimulant that your body is accustomed to, and the withdrawal symptoms can include ranging intensity of headache and fatigue.  These symptoms can be rough, but they will eventually subside as your body gets used to the absence of caffeine.

Conclusion

Red Bull may have started with only an original flavor but now offers a variety of editions of diverse flavors that are always subject to change. Even some of the most popular flavor varieties have been discontinued, but you never know what Red Bull will come up with next. Energy drink consumption must be limited due to health concerns ranging from mild to severe concerning excessive consumption.
